The short answer
If your existing Discord bot is stable on Node.js 22, there is usually no reason to switch immediately just because Node.js 24 is available. For a new project, Node.js 24 can be a sensible choice when your framework and dependencies support it.
Why runtime compatibility matters
Your bot depends on more than Node.js itself. Packages such as Discord libraries, database drivers, native modules and build tools can impose their own version requirements. A runtime upgrade can expose incompatibilities even when your own code has not changed.
Node.js 22: when it makes sense
- Your bot is already tested and stable on it.
- A dependency specifically supports or recommends it.
- You want to avoid unnecessary runtime changes on a production bot.
- You are migrating an existing project and want to change one thing at a time.
Node.js 24: when it makes sense
- You are starting a new project.
- Your dependencies explicitly support it.
- You have tested the bot's commands, events, database connections and startup process.
- You want to build against a newer supported runtime.
Check your package requirements first
Look at your project's package.json, package documentation and installation output. Some projects define a Node.js engine requirement, while native modules may need to be rebuilt after changing runtime versions.
Test before switching production
A runtime change should be treated like any other deployment change. Start the bot, watch the console, test commands, verify database connections and confirm scheduled jobs or background tasks still operate correctly.
Make a backup, verify dependency support and test the new runtime before relying on it for a live community.
What about Discord.js?
The Discord library version used by your project may have its own minimum Node.js requirement. Always check the documentation for the exact version you have installed rather than assuming every Discord.js release supports every runtime.
HostFlow bot hosting
HostFlow supports Node.js 22 and Node.js 24 for Discord bot hosting, so you can choose the runtime that matches your project instead of being forced onto one version.
Run your bot on Node.js 22 or 24.
HostFlow includes console access, SFTP, NVMe storage, automatic crash restarts and a Pterodactyl control panel.
